This is a test where sound waves create images of the uterus and fallopian tubes before and after a salt water solution is placed in the uterus.

A saline sonohysterography is when sound waves are sent to a computer from a probe inserted into your vagina. The sound waves create detailed images of your uterus and fallopian tubes.

  • The images are taken before and after a salt water solution (saline) is placed into the uterus. This is done using a small tube that goes through the cervix into the uterus.
  • The saline outlines abnormalities in the lining of the uterus and fallopian tubes. This makes them easier to see on the ultrasound.

Your healthcare provider may order this test if you have had:

  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Menstrual problems
  • Infertility
  • Pain in the lower abdomen

Here are some things you should know before having this test.

  • Your healthcare provider can tell you other things you need to do to prepare.
  • You may want to wear a loose two-piece outfit, so you can remove just the bottom for the exam.
  • You will need to lie on your back with your feet in stirrups. This is similar to your position when you have a Pap smear or pelvic (internal) exam.
  • Only the end of the probe will be put into your vagina.
  • The test usually takes about 30 minutes.

The costs for this test include the charge for the test (facility charge) and physician charges (for performing or interpreting the test). You may get separate bills from the facility and the physician's office.

What should I ask my healthcare provider before having this test?

  • Is there any special preparation for the test? (If so, get clear instructions on what you need to do.
  • Why are you ordering this test? Will the test results change my treatment plan? If not, do I need the test?
