Ultrasound - Neck Soft Tissues

This test uses sound waves to create images of the soft tissues in your neck.

This test uses sound waves to create images of the soft tissues in your neck.

An ultrasound of the neck uses sound waves to create images of organs and tissues in your neck. These structures can include the:

  • Thyroid gland
  • Parathyroid glands
  • Parotid glands

Your healthcare provider may order this test to evaluate:

  • A lump in your neck
  • Thyroid nodules (to see if they have grown or a biopsy is needed)
  • The parathyroid and parotid glands

An ultrasound takes about 30 minutes and is usually painless. You may have some discomfort during the test if the area being checked is swollen or tender.

  • During the test a technician will move a probe over the front and back of your neck and your upper shoulders.
  • The probe will be covered with a clear gel that helps send the sound waves to a computer.

Your healthcare provider will tell you if you need to do anything to prepare for the ultrasound.

The costs for this test include the charge for the test (facility charge) and physician charges (for performing or interpreting the test). You may get separate bills from the facility and the physician's office.

What should I ask my healthcare provider before having this test?

  • Is there any special preparation for the test? (If so, get clear instructions on what you need to do.)
  • Why are you ordering this test? Will the test results change my treatment plan? If not, do I need the test?
