A transcranial doppler study is the use of sound waves to create images of the flow of blood through the blood vessels in the brain.

Your healthcare provider may order a transcranial ultrasound if you:

  • Have symptoms of a problem with the flow of blood in your brain
  • Have a condition that may lead to problems with blood flow in the brain, such as sickle cell disease
  • Are at risk for a stroke

Your healthcare provider can tell you how to prepare for the test.

  • Ultrasounds are usually painless. You may have some discomfort during the test if the area being checked is swollen or tender.
  • The test usually takes about 30 minutes.

During the test, a technician will move a probe over your head and neck.

The probe will be covered with a clear gel that helps send the sound waves to the computer.
  • In infants, the probe will be moved over the soft spot, where the skull has not completely formed.

The costs for this test include the charge for the test (facility charge) and physician charges (for performing or interpreting the test). You may get separate bills from the facility and the physician's office.

What should I ask my healthcare provider before having this test?

  • Is there any preparation for the test? (If so, get clear steps to follow.)
  • What is the reason for the test? Are the test results likely to change my treatment plan? If not, why do I need the test?
